Fashion designer Liz Bruce and her husband, artist Nicholas Alvis Vega, were introduced to the Ourika Valley by their driver when visiting Marrakech. In a Berber village in this riverside region at the foot of the Atlas mountains, they found the shell of a half built riad, abandoned in the 1970's. Ever since the engagement last Spring, Swedish media have been speculating on who would be designing Crown Princes Victoria's wedding dress, an international couture house or a Swedish designer. The choice fell upon Swedish Per Engsheden who created a modern, minimalistic dream in pearl white silk duchesse. The bridal bouquet was composed mainly of Swedish summer flowers. The veil is the same as Queen Silvia wore for her wedding to the Swedish King in 1976 and was created for Sofia of Nassau when she married Prince Oscar (II) in 1858. The crown was a gift from emperor Napoleon to his wife Josephine in 1809 and was brought to Sweden by her niece Josefina when she married Prince Oscar (I) in 1823. I'm dreaming about building a house and leaving the city with my family. I'm so in love with this house by architect Jeff Kovel at Skylab Architecture in Portland. The house was built in 2007 and bought by Nike director John Hoke and his family after two days on the market. It was featured in the film Twilight as the Cullens' home. In my gallery Andyland we have some new limited edition pictures by Tess Jacobsson and Wolfgang Lehmann. Tess Jacobsson works as an illustrator and graphic designer. She founded her own company Tess J Design in 2006 after finishing studies at Berghs School of Communication in Stockholm. Tess Jacobson's images express strong energy and have a romantic feeling. Wolfgang Lehmann is a film maker and artist. His first cinematic efforts were made in 1989. Since 1994 Wolfgang Lehmann has realised and produced his own films, many of which were invited for showings at festivals and art spaces all over the world. In his films Wolfgang Lehmann makes use mostly of documentary material. His works can be characterised by an exact and often rhythmic-like montage, as well as extremely short takes that result in overlapping images.

Gandia Blasco is a Valencian design company that has been manufacturing textiles for over 60 years. They are most known for their mainly white, outdoor furniture but over the past few years they have gone back to their textile roots and have produced some intriguing rugs under the brand name Gan. The rugs come in hand tufted and hand knotted varieties, with designs influenced by cultures including Persian, Arabic and Mediterranean. The parents decided that their family home, where lighting designer Pier Lorenzo Salvone and his siblings grew up, had become too much for them. The solution was to convert the house into three apartments: one for them, and one each for the two sons. Pier, who initially studied architecture, designed the transformation. Stockholm has been busy with two contemporary art fairs this week-end: Market and Supermarket. The gallery Roger Björkholmen showed at Market and presented some works by Lukas Göthman who is a personal favourite. He paints letters which sentence by sentence build a visual composition set over a monochrome of colour. He has a very special way of working with repetitive text and each combination of a text and background colour set a different emotional tone for the work.

Caitlin and Samuel Dowe-Sandes lived and worked in New York and Los Angeles before moving to Marrakech in June 2006. Samuel, a filmmaker, and Caitlin, a PR executive specialized in design business dreamt of moving to an exotic place and starting a creative venture together. Marrakech turned out to be the perfect place and they bought a 250 year-old house and started to renovate it. Drawn to the black-and white tiles in their own courtyard they started to make their own tile design. The cement material turned out to be a perfect medium for modern graphic designs which led the couple to found Popham Design.

Stockholm Fashion Week has started which I mentioned in an earlier post. This has attracted a lot of interesting guests, among them the prominent street fashion bloggers Garance Doré and The Sartorialist. Scott Schulman , aka The Sartorialist, has been here before and shows his images without reflection. Garance Doré on the other hand seems delighted but a bit puzzled by the Stockholmers. "We are light years from Paris, Milan and New York. But that is exactly what I like about it. Opening myself up to a new universe, discovering little by little the new fashion planet that is the Scandinavian countries." "... the Swedish fashion is wearable, for sure, but it is also sometimes repetitive. Black, white, grey, and this shifted sensuality that I sometimes find hard to appreciate. Is it because the girls are so beautiful that they love to hide themselves in garments a little bit too... bizarre? The shoes on the verge of orthopedic? I don't know, but it really interests me", she says.

And it is really interesting. I myself find Swedish fashion above all a bit melancholic. But we are after all the country of Strindberg and Bergman. Life isn't always fun, is it? First four images from Garance Doré, the last from The Sartorialist.

Swedish Ulrika Gyllstad and Wilhelmina Wiese started the fabric brand Bantie in 2007 and the collection is now available through retailers in England, Italy, Norway, Denmark and Japan. Now the brand also has its own web-shop. Bantie’s collection consists of seven patterns. In total there are 18 different colour combinations. The fabrics come by the metre, but they also make cushions, floor cushions, table cloths, table mats, bags, cosmetic bags, wash bags, trays and Russian dolls.
